Yes, you read that right. Apparently happened last year, I heard about it today.
Not many details, but all 3 drunk drivers were arrested.

Too soon for memes? Just to be clear, still a tragedy, not trying to be insensitive. But that’s just... ridiculous.

And yet people still thinking drinking and driving is okay.
Part of the punishment for drunk drivers should be forcing them to go with police for next of kin calls and also taking a walk through a morgue.

It was a year ago and everyone survived, I’d say memes are fair game.

I once heard a story.
Cop pulls a guy over. Guy is driving drunk. Vehicle is impounded, guy is arrested, the guy is sitting in the back of the truck on the way to get breath samples, complaining about “how is this going to affect my license, how will I get around if I can’t drive”. The guy says to the cop, “you know, one of my friends was killed by a drunk driver”.
The guy blew almost twice the legal limit, and admitted to drinking just prior to driving because he didn’t think he’d get caught because the cops are never on the grid roads.
You bet it took a lot of willpower for the cop to not punch this guy out, because holy fuck do people not get it.

Sounds like the same bar over- served these drunk drivers. And the bar probably still has their license.

I don’t want to jump to conclusions before all the facts are in, but Austin may have a slight drinking problem.

Skip that, just put them in the morgue and leave them there, permanently. No need for second chances. That should be a pretty good deterrent itself.

After the NOK, we give them a good lashing with the baton.

Death and the death penalty are actually pretty terrible at deterrence. Most people don’t think they’ll die, or they don’t think about the consequences (ah hedonism, thanks classical criminology).
My buddy had a pretty good joke: say what you will about the death penalty, but it’s really good at preventing recidivism.

That baton is no joke. It wouldn’t be a lashing as much as a beating.

Well yeah that last part was my main motivation for thinking that. From what it sounds, nothing deters people from doing the crime the first time. But you can sure as hell bet they arent repeating it with that penalty! The problem is that people who do it once and “see the light” or are “ scared straight” are actually good people. But the repeat offenders really are just a scourge on society. Trying to figure out who is in which category is damn near impossible though.
I just feel that drunk driving is so inconsiderate and is probably the worst thing someone could possibly do for how easy it is to avoid. Sure it might be expensive to take a cab and your car might get towed but if you are that worried about cost, you could have just not drank in the first place and saved a ton of money.

I agree. There are a lot of crap people, but I also believe that everyone is one bad day away from ending up before the courts, who would do one thing and never do anything else again .
I do agree it’s easy make plans to get a DD, crash at a friend’s place, stay home, or not drink at all. But a lot of people don’t think because they’ve always driven drunk and nothing has happened yet. I also live in an area where a cab, Uber, and public transit just don’t exist, which limits people’s options.
In any case, I think we’re starting to reach a point where the younger people are getting it. I just hope no one else dies before the older ones figure it out.

People shouldn’t be drinking and driving, but if I’m entirely honest I think a lot of these incidents wouldn’t occur if every emergency vehicle on the road weren’t emitting a trillion lumens of strobing blindness.

Does the US have any sort of drink driving awareness in schools?
I got it several times a year from about the age of 7, plus regular ad campaigns.. and as a learner or provisional driver there is a 0 tolerance for alcohol in your system when driving. Instant loss of license.

You misunderstand. Any establishment with a liquor license could be held responsible if one of their patrons is over-served then that person causes an accident once they leave. So a bar/tavern/restaurant could be liable for damage/injury/death , face misdemeanor/felony charges, and/or have their license suspended or revoked.
While not the same, a bar that I frequent was fined $10k a few years ago for the weirdest thing — a patron finishing his drink from a glass bottle 20 minutes after legal sales and after hours. If the patron had a plastic cup, everything would have been alright. *insert well emoji*

I’m not misunderstood. I don’t care about what the local law is.
The bar is a contributing factor but it’s still the drunk drivers decision to drive.
You can be too impaired to safely drive after only 2 drinks.

That’s the thing, it’s not a zero-tolerance policy here. You are legally allowed to drive with some alcohol in your system if you are following all other traffic laws. This fosters an atmosphere where people think it’s “okay” because they don’t -think- they are over the legal limit. If the legal limit was 0.0 0, I think things would change over time.
